Maragha Castle
Maragha Castle lies in a quiet village of the same name, in the Al Batinah South Governorate in Oman.
Other than its name, I don't know anything about Maragha Castle. If you know anything; please mail me.
The castle was built as a mud brick fortification. The two towers have a core of mud bricks, around which a shell of rocks and mud was built up.
It has a square ground plan with ruins of 2 round corner towers on opposite corners. There is a rectangular gate building with an angled entryway in the north wall. This is a typical layout for a 'sur'. A 'sur' is the Omani denomination of a simple communal fortification. They were built, maintained and used as a place of refuge by the villagers in times of danger. The castle is now slowly crumbling away.
At present the ruin of Maragha Castle is freely accessible. I like the ruin a lot. Mostly because of the combination of different methods of construction.
