Tkviavi Castle

Tkviavi Castle lies in the village of the same name, in the Gori municipality in the Shida Kartli region in Georgia.

I read that Tkviavi Castle was built to counter the invasion of Leks, a group name for Islamic highlanders from the Northern Caucasus, who frequently raided the area during the 17th and 18th century. So it was probably built during those centuries.

The castle was the seat of the Tamaz family in Kareli and used for defensive as well as residential purposes. According to an inscription somewhere in the ruined castle, it was equipped with several towers in the 1750s.

The small ruined castle is now very much overgrown, so it is hard to see much of it.

At present Tkviavi Castle can not be visited as it is situated on someone's private terrain. A simple castle ruin. The towers of Tirdznisi and Marana are close by.
